Today, organic farming plays an increasingly bigger role on the world’s agricultural stage. In the European Union, the use of organic agricultural land has almost doubled in recent years. Austria, the Czech Republic and Estonia have the highest proportion of organically farmed land in Europe. EU citizens are also increasing their demand for organic products. Europe is the second largest market in the world, worth €22.7 billion. Germans, French and British are the biggest consumers. Organic farming is often seen as a solution to feeding a growing global population and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. Critics, however, suggest that organic yields are on average 20 to 25% lower than those of conventional farms. More land to produce the same amount of food is needed, re...

(12 Aug 2016) LEAD IN: Cuba's former President Fidel Castro celebrates his 90th birthday today (August 13, 2016). Things have changed on the island nation since Castro's brother Raul replaced him as president in February 2008. Cuba's urban organic farms are aiming to supply citizens directly with sustainable fresh food and challenge the reliance on food imported from abroad. STORY-LINE: This is an organoponico or urban organic farm. Just two kilometres from Havana, the capital city, the Vivero Alamar farm is at the forefront of Cuban organic agriculture. Cuba has a longstanding culture of organic farming by necessity. During the "Special Period" of the 1990s, many private urban plots popped up in Havana amid the austerity that followed the collapse of Cuba's backer, the Soviet Union. Isis Maria Salcines Milla, an urban organic farming specialist at the Alamar Project, explains. "This transformative model in Cuba was designed to deal with the conditions of the "special period" (when the economy collapsed after the Soviet Union withdrew financial support of Cuba in 1992) because we went from a conventional agricultural model to a green revolution, from the use of insecticides, pesticides, fertilisers, an unhealthy way of production, to this model. So, when we began this model, we had to become organic, not out of conviction but out of necessity. We either produced this way or we faced death by starvation," she says. Unlike in the United States, pesticide-free is largely the rule here rather than the exception, mostly due to a lack of supply. The organic farms are creating a direct link between the producers and the owners of private restaurants in the non-state sector. A new generation of privately run restaurants known as "paladars" has breathed life into Cuba's culinary scene. Ivan Rodriguez Lopez is the owner of a paladar called "El Carbon". "In urban organic farming there are no fertilisers. Organic fertilisers are a result of the needs of the farmers. And for me that's an advantage." Kaski Kosakowski, is a member of "Sustainable Summer", a US organisation that prepares teens to become environmental leaders. Today she is overseeing a group of American teens weeding a row of lettuce at an organic farm. "So we been here for almost two weeks. We leave in a couple of days, looking at cultural sustainability and environment sustainability while the relationship between Cuba and the United States is changing and developing. And we are here today to learn a little bit more about the food system here and particularly take advantage of the cultural project outside of Havana and the history of organoponicos (urban organic farming)." Americans cannot travel as ordinary tourists to Cuba under current US regulations, but they may participate in certain types of trips, including people-to-people trips that foster cultural exchanges. US interest in Cuba has climbed rapidly since President Barack Obama announced diplomatic ties would be restored on December 17, 2014. Timothy Smith is another member of the Sustainable Summer project. "Cuba imports a lot of their food, so locally grown food is always a good option. But you just got to get the people to start buying locally and that's all part of what we are learning about doing the sustainable lifestyle," he says. According to the World Food Programme, Cuba imports 70 to 80 percent of the food it needs from abroad. Proponents of urban organic farming say it has immense potential to boost domestic production. But it is unlikely to meet all of Cuba's food needs, and government interference tends to limit organic urban farms' production and distribution. Lopez says he would rather buy from the organoponico than a government controlled market. More land to produce the same amount of food is needed, resulting in more deforestation and biodiversity loss. The European Commission, the European Parliament, and EU member states are currently discussing how to regulate the organic farming sector. The outcome of the negotiations will be crucial for its future. Sources: Eurostat, FIBL-IFOAM, European Union (Organic Monitor).

Learn the secrets of Australia's Top Organic Farmers. Organic farming is currently receiving a lot of attention. Many farmers are keen to give organics a go but are unsure about the process involved and it's viability. Our one hour video hopes to demystify organic farming by bringing together some of Australia's top commercial organic and non-toxic farmers, and ask them how they manage their enterprises without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Mark joined a tour led by Nuffield Farming Scholar Don MacFarlane which took in ten different properties including the Victorian Agricultural Research Centre. The great thing about the one hour video is that it allows the farmers involved to tell their own story on why they went organic, how they went about it and whether it has been a viable move. The video covers such diverse farming enterprises as organic cattle, sheep, poultry, pigs, grain, wine, fruit and vegetables. Some of the farms included in the video are: The Druce family farm "Green Grove" which produces it's own flour and confectionary at their Junee flourmill. Alan Druce has been organic since 1962 and the success they are having with their Green Grove Organics operation in Junee is a fine example to country towns everywhere of what can be done to bring life back into the country. The Statham Family property "Rosnay" near Canowindra which is setting up a grower-marketing group for organic wine, olives, potatoes and pastured poultry. The Statham's wish to form an organic farming community at Rosnay, with 20 acre blocks available for purchase. Nick and Fiona Chambers of 'Fernleigh Farms' near Daylesford, who farm organic vegetables, beef and grazing pigs. They have developed an export market to Japan. Fiona is a senior consultant with Rendell McGuckian Agricultural and Management Consultants and is involved in developing the organic dairy industry. The Johnson's of Wombat Wholefoods near Young show farmer's how even with limited acreage, non-toxic farming can be successful. Sam Johnson runs laying and meat chickens in movable pens, free range turkeys, pigs, cattle and fruit trees. Sam has an on property abattoir and direct markets his produce to consumers and restaurants. An amazing system whereby any waste from the abattoir is used to fertilize his fruit trees and any spoilt fruit is fed to his pigs. The Snowy Mountain Organic Dairy Farm near Cooryong. Stephen Whitstead was recently awarded Victorian Farmer of the year for his initiative in filling a niche market with low fat milk and cream. Weekly times Farmer of the year nominees Gerry and Terry Browning of Yarrawonga, who have had great success using organic principles to rotationally graze their 350 cow herd in a single mob. The video is full of good advice and good ideas. It is refreshing to hear farmers themselves talk passionately and succinctly about their operations.
